For over thirty years Adrienne’s art practice has been influenced by her immediate environment. Whether travelling through Europe, America, or Australia, or at home in her country studio, she is always making notes and sketches which then become reference for her major works in paint or clay. She has over 100 sketch books which she repeatedly refers to. (Excerpts of her books have been published in Australian and American Art magazines.) “Drawing is the major element of my art, and always the starting point” Adrienne says. Describing an illusion of space with paint on a two dimensional surface has been an endless quest, as the reality of a scene is abstracted and reconstructed on canvas. The manipulation of the depth of a landscape has resulted in a play with scale. Although Adrienne often works on 5metre canvases, she is known throughout the world for her miniature paintings – intricate images measuring no more than 100square cms. Since 1990 she has won many awards for her miniatures in Australia, USA & Canada. Sculpture has always featured in Adrienne’s practice from the 1980s, fired clay being the preferred medium. Inspired by the ceramics of Spain and Italy, her clay pieces developed into heavily decorated, handpainted & glazed objects. Working in pottery studios in Turkey, she experimented with turning on the wheel, distorting the shapes, then scratching and embellishing the surface. Allowing her imagination to wander, she uses her drawing and painting skills on the ceramic pieces which explore the changing nature of food and the habit of eating. |
